We’re thrilled to feature our first family member post! Donna Locascio (Carla’s sister) is exploring places near and far…
After shoveling eight inches of the white stuff, we packed a “flee” bag and headed south. Although we knew it would still be winter in Delaware, we started out to the beach. It was now a clear, dry day, and that made all of the difference. One might think it’s useless to go to the beach when you can’t lie out in the sunshine, but in any weather, there’s still that great feeling when staring at the ocean.
Rehoboth has a shoreline very similar to the Jersey Shore. There’s a boardwalk very similar as well. Although some of the stands were closed on a cool February weekend, many people came to celebrate a long President’s Day weekend. The hotels were open, shops and restaurants were open, and even a bike rental was open. The boardwalk almost looked like a “Best in show” dog show with a tremendous amount of dogs parading down it. Since dogs are not allowed on the boards from May to September, the dog people have another reason to go to Rehoboth in the winter.
After exploring the length of the boardwalk (about 12 blocks) we walked into our hotel. The Boardwalk Plaza Hotel. The Victorian Décor, antique furnishings and warm hospitality was more than appealing. The cleanliness, comfortable bed, restaurant and pub made this a place we could see us returning to again.
The streets of Rehoboth were full and friendly. Dolles had a constant line, obviously a local tradition. You could smell the vinegar from the French fries in the air.
What luck we had when we randomly choose to eat at the Blackwall Hitch! The atmosphere, service and food were incomparable. The background music was aimed to please, with a wide variety of artists from Diana Ross to Pink Floyd, including some old disco favorites and some folksy songs. There was even a painted wall with a favorite Led Zeppelin lyric.
Back at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel, the Plaza Pub offered a relaxing atmosphere and great food. The lobster mac and cheese was exceptional. One more advantage to a winter getaway, was watching the Winter Olympics in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere.
The amenities such as private balcony turn down service, and rooftop Jacuzzi (available in any season) make this hotel a sure favorite. The breakfast at Victoria’s Restaurant was amazing. A late check out made this overnight visit feel complete.
