Only 33 years ago we celebrated our Honeymoon aboard a cruise ship. Our bags packed with our best dressy attire, we picked the late dinner seating and our floating hotel whisked is away for a taste of tropical paradise and onboard elegance.
Just 10 years ago, we departed out of our home port in Bayonne, NJ for a 5 day family cruise to celebrate our parents 50th anniversary. 22 if us had an absolute blast running up the biggest bar bill I’ve ever seen in my life.
Three weeks ago, to celebrate our best friend’s 60th birthday (where does the time go), we left freezing NYC for 7 fun-filled, carefree days aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Breakaway. It was the perfect way to leave the world behind for a bit and focus on what’s really important in life.
Cruising has certainly changed over the years, and if you haven’t been on a ship in a while, or if you think cruising just isn’t for you, you might want to hear about what’s new and different in today’s ‘Freestyle’ cruising.
Carla, our family travel agent (shameless plug, but she is the BEST RESOURCE for all of your travel needs) got us an amazing deal and set up everything before we left, so all we had to think about was what to drink with dinner (and where and when to have it). Here’s what you should know about the new experience and why you might want to put Cruising on your vacation wish list. Visit

1. Eat when, where and how you want. A Freestyle Cruise doesn’t have a set dinner seating. Be as casual as you like at an endless buffet or spiff it up a bit at a fancier restaurant. And yes, I did say restaurant, not dining hall. The choices are amazing. We enjoyed everything from a classic steakhouse, to the sushi bar, Irish Pub (open all night), Italian Bistro…it just keeps going. Your package can have up to 5 specialty meals included.
2. The ultimate drink package. For those of us who enjoy a cocktail now and then…lose your fear of the 12 page bar bill (we kid you not) at the end of your trip with an unlimited open bar. Only a minimal charge for drinks costing over $15…and that was just a few dollars for a Macallan 12. Believe me, you can get your money’s worth! I have to make special mention of the Svedka Ice Bar.
3. The Entertainment has come a long way. When the description says ‘Broadway caliber’ it isn’t an exaggeration. Our ship featured the hit show ‘Rock of Ages’ which was truly outstanding. Every evening had so many different choices: dueling pianos at ‘Howl at the Moon’, Cirque de Soliel dinner theater, comedy, casino, themed dancing from Motown to Ultimate 80’s. Not enough room to list it all!
4. Free shore excursions can also be a choice depending upon the package you book. What you do depends entirely on the experience you seek. Kayak through mangroves, sail and snorkel in crystal clear waters, or take in the history of a charming port and island culture. This has always been a part of cruising, but the choices have definitely expanded to things that are truly unique.
For us, it’s always about exploring the natural beauty and local cuisine our ports-of-call offer. After an afternoon catamaran to Rainbow Reef in Nassau, we feasted on Conch Fritters and Sliders at Lukka Kaiti overlooking the turquoise water. Sound good?
Today’s ships continue to amaze. Here are just a couple more highlights from our trip:
The 3-story free fall waterslide was like being shot out of a cannon (not that I ever have been)
Partying our asses off at the Ultimate 70’s Disco Party (yes, we remember the 70’s).
An incredible hot stone massage (sorry, no pictures).
Whiskey tasting with an expert mixologist
Staring at the open ocean from a deck lounge chair
Enjoying all the inside activities when it was too cold to be outside (March can be quite unpredictable out of NYC).
We all enjoy vacations in our own style. Over the past few years, Carla and I have been traveling abroad, enjoying the incredible history and culture of Europe and Asia. When our kids were younger, every year took us to a tropical paradise where we could swim and play together. This year’s cruise with our dearest friends was truly a special way spend precious time together and make new memories that will keep us smiling and laughing forever.
However you decide to enjoy your well-deserved break from reality, we hope all your travel dreams come true.
Have you been on a cruise lately? Please tell us about your experience, and ask us anything about Freestyle Cruising on NCL. Bon Voyage!
